Formal proposal

Mount Munson → Munson Hill

A copyable correction proposal focused on tourist confusion, accurate expectation-setting, and preservation of the Munson name.

FORMAL GEOGRAPHICAL NAME CORRECTION PROPOSAL

Current official name: Mount Munson
Proposed corrected geographical name: Munson Hill
Acceptable secondary / visitor-facing alternative: Munson Lookout
Approximate coordinates: 49°30′56″N, 119°34′24″W
Location: SE side of Okanagan Lake, in Penticton, Similkameen Division Yale Land District, British Columbia
Current authority/source: BC Geographical Names record for Mount Munson

Requested action:
Correct the official geographical name from Mount Munson to Munson Hill. If the decision-maker prefers a visitor-facing descriptive label rather than a geographical renaming, Munson Lookout is an acceptable secondary alternative for signage and tourism materials.

Public-interest reason for correction:
The central public harm is tourist confusion and inaccurate expectation-setting. British Columbia markets itself to local, national, and international visitors as an outdoor and nature destination. Visitors reasonably rely on public-facing names when planning trips. “Mount Munson” or “Munson Mountain” can suggest a mountain destination or mountain hike. The public records describe a more modest feature: the Canadian Register and City of Penticton Heritage Registry describe Munson Mountain as a “prominent hill,” and the City of Penticton Parks page describes a short trail of approximately 1 km round trip suitable for all ages.

The mismatch can harm visitors in two ways. Some visitors may be disappointed if they expect a mountain-scale objective. Others may be deterred from visiting a short accessible lookout because “mountain” sounds harder than it is. Correcting the name to Munson Hill would preserve the historical Munson identity while aligning the public name with the documented landform and visitor experience.

Significance of proposed name:
“Munson” should be retained because it is the established historical and local identity attached to the PENTICTON sign landmark and the existing official record. “Hill” should replace “Mount” because public heritage records, City visitor information, and accurate expectation-setting support hill/lookout rather than mountain/mount.

International visitor context:
Destination Canada and Destination BC actively market British Columbia and Canada to international leisure source markets. Some of those visitors come from countries where “mountain” commonly has more substantial meanings or is tied to measurable elevation, relief, slope, access-land, or hiking classifications. Those foreign definitions do not legally bind British Columbia. They do show why accurate public-facing landform language matters for international tourists.
