BC naming process

How the Name Can Be Corrected

The practical route is a written proposal to the BC Geographical Names Office. The proposal should focus on public accuracy, visitor expectation-setting, and the already-documented hill/lookout evidence.

Policy requirements

The BC policy already describes the submission package.

The geographical naming policy says written proposals must include a precise map/delineation, a valid reason, the significance or meaning of the proposed name, and itemized research including local sources and reference materials.

“precise delineation of the feature to be named on a photocopy of a 1:50 000 or similarly detailed map”
“a valid reason for naming the particular feature at this time”
“the significance or meaning of the proposed name”
“itemization of all research undertaken, including a list of local sources contacted ... and reference materials examined”
Correction package

The Munson Hill package should include:

  1. Current official name: Mount Munson.
  2. Proposed corrected name: Munson Hill.
  3. Secondary alternative: Munson Lookout for visitor-facing signs and tourism descriptions.
  4. Coordinates: approximately 49°30′56″N, 119°34′24″W from the BC record.
  5. Reason: reduce tourist confusion and align the official label with public heritage and City descriptions.
  6. Sources: BC Geographical Names, BC naming policy, Land Act, Canadian Register, City Heritage Registry, City Parks page, Destination BC/Canada market evidence.
